A brand new replacement Intermotor distributor rotor arm for the points type distributor on the Hilux Pickup petrol models between 1979-1997, fits inside the distributor cap.
Rotor arms commonly degrade over time from general wear and tear, so replacing it ensures that your ignition creates the consistent spark required to keep your engine running smoothly. Often replaced in conjunction with the cap, points, and condenser.
What is a rotor arm, and what does it do?
The rotor arm is part of the ignition system, sitting inside the distributor cap. It's driven by a gear which turns the arm, spinning it so that the metal ends make contact with the electrical parts inside.
A rotor arm and transfers the charge from the ignition coil to the multiple touch points for the engine cylinders. As the charge is carried from the ignition module through the coil and into the cap, the rotor arm spins inside the distributor cap, allowing it to connect with the multiple touch points or posts that are connected to the spark plugs in the engine.
When the rotor's tip passes a contact on the cylinder, a high-voltage pulse travels from the coil to the cylinder via the rotor. That pulse jumps the little gap between contact and rotor and moves on to the spark plug wire, eventually igniting the spark plug on the cylinder. So the ignition system fails if it becomes dislodged or stops spinning.
Because of all the high-voltage activity, the rotor arm and distributor cap have to be replaced relatively frequently as they do wear out easily.
