Now proudly supplying a 100% new UK Manufactured rear prop shaft as per original design with double cardan joint (wide angle joint) setup, for Hilux KDN165 Mk5 with Independent front suspension (IFS).
IMS manufactured prop shafts are professionally balanced individually and proven with a technical balance certificate enclosed with each prop shaft.
The rear prop on the Mk5 is split into 2 parts, this section is the rear part of the rear prop shaft from the Centre Bearing carrier to the rear differential.
The prop has a sliding splined joint which fits at the rear axle, whilst the double "Cardan Joint" (wide angle double joint) fits to the centre bearing end.
About the shaft:
- Manufactured in the UK to the original design specification.
- Features a high quality "Double Cardan Joint" (wide angled double joint) the cause of most front prop failures.
- Matsui UJ's with thick internal circlips.
- CNC Computer generated machining processes for flanges and uprated splines for increased shaft life-span
- The latest PBM7 Balancing machine is used on every shaft - after which each shaft is individually marked for alignment.
- BSI registered and approved to Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008
- IMS are accredited suppliers to GKN, Dana Spicer, Voith UK and many GKN operations in Scandinavia and European countries - these names speak volumes.
- So yes, more expensive than cheaper unbranded Imported shafts but the quality of this shaft is plain to see in the components used which is why RoughTrax has now chosen IMS to be our UK manufacturer for this shaft.
Please note:
Always grease shaft prior to fitment - a shaft should be greased every month if working in harsh conditions. Don't forget - there are 5 grease nipples on the shaft!
Common issues:
Quite often the Cardan Joint or wide angle joint as is often known fails, this is the joint that has two UJ's very close together to form one joint, in between these two UJ's is an internal "ball and socket" type joint which is generally what fails and causes severe vibration and harsh knocking noises.
Generally speaking, once this Cardan joint fails then the prop is scrapped, only specialist repair companies can replace this and is usually more expensive than this complete Genuine Toyota shaft.
Maintenance / Fitting:
Our new shaft should be fitted with the splined sliding end at the rear axle as Toyota originally designed.
UJ's should be greased with a Lithium Base NLGI No.2 grease our part WC010, its been recommended that shafts be greased once a month or every 1000 miles in harsh conditions.

Questions & Answers for IMS Rear Prop Shaft - Rear Section - KDN165
Is the new shaft balanced?
Yes, you will notice balance plates spot welded to the shaft, the new shaft is balanced and the splines aligned.
Do I need to balance the front section of the shaft to the new rear section?
Ideally yes, Driveline specialists would always recommend removing the front section from gearbox to centre bearing and balancing the entire rear shaft as one unit to avoid any potential vibration. When Toyota fitted a new shaft the complete rear shaft from gearbox down to diff would have been balanced as one long prop-shaft.
Anything to look out for?
Our new rear shaft is fitted with the splined end at the centre bearing not down at the diff end.
Don't forget, when offering up to the front section shaft with the centre bearing all fixed yokes should be in-line.
Keep all prop-shafts regularly greased especially if working in harsh conditions.
