Owen Springs - The Better Choice!
Outstanding quality leaf springs designed to perform with the same ride quality and load as the genuine original spring. It's obvious to see the manufacturing precision of these springs, what's more they now also come with the small dynamic balance fitted to the front of the leaf spring, something that many other manufacturers simply don't offer.

What Owens offer in their manufacturing:
Heat treated manufacturing guarantees a constantly high-quality product. Every Owens leaf spring undergoes tests consisting of metallographic investigations, the mechanical material testing, and long life tests. What's more, we're proud that its a UK manufactured product.

  • Highest grade BS970 spring steel shaped by their hot camber forming process between 950 and 1050°C.
  • Quenched in oil and drained they pass through the tempering furnace between 500-550°C to achieve the correct Brinell hardness reading.
  • Top leaf or "Main-Leaf" is 7mm thick and rolled at either end to retain the bushes and attach to the chassis, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th leaves are also 7mm thick, together they provide the ride. When loaded the top set of 4 leaves contact the two lower which are 12mm thick providing a good ride with excellent weight control.
  • The pack has a central bolt which not only holds the leaves together but also locates and supports the axle central to the spring for correct axle alignment.
  • Shot peening - Carefully controlled shot peening process significantly increases the fatigue life of a spring.
  • Bushes are in the form of the original designed rubber "metalastic" front eyelet fixed bush and two "top hat" rubber bushes to make up the rear spring eyelet bush.
  • The springs are painted in a "Transport" paint, as with all suspension components supplied, paint is not covered under warranty due to the very nature and position of the component.

Quality of steel and construction, number of leaves, and thickness of these individuals leaves is what truly sets this spring apart from others.

High-end leaf springs help to prevent body roll in bends and also perform under load when towing or carrying heavy loads whilst improving vehicle looks and handling, for off and on road use.

Many cheaper Imported springs will increase the thickness of the top ride springs to compensate for using cheaper poor quality steel, this, in turn, results in a very harsh ride and individual leaves become susceptible to cracking.

Good practice:

  • It is recommended that you replace the Front Spring Pin SUHW007 with this spring as they have a habit of seizing in the front bush of the old spring,
  • It is always good practice to replace all springs as a pair so as to even out the loading, if you have one new spring acting with one old then the new spring will be under greater pressure, it could also affect the ride heights between old and new.
  • Replacing "U" bolts too is a good idea, they can be a real pain to undo!

About Owens:
The company is totally committed to quality and this is evident by its accreditation for the manufacture, repair, and supply of all spring types by to BS EN ISO certification, which has been held since 1991, what's more, they also hold the ISO9001 certification.

Flying Scotsman:
Manufacturing springs for well over 30 years their experience is second to none, in fact one of their highlights was being the chosen manufacturer to replace one of the broken leaf springs prior to the Flying Scotsman’s inaugural trip and are currently repairing and replacing the spare springs while the famous engine carries out its tour of the country

Fitting Tip:
Tighten all spring retaining bolts and shackles when the vehicle is at normal ride height, this is done once the vehicle is assembly, lowered back to the ground with the weight back on the suspension and bounced a few times, this allows the bushes to settle in and vital for correct final assembly.

Questions & Answers for Owens Rear Leaf Spring UK Manufactured

Should you replace rear springs as a pair?
It is always good practice to replace as a pair, because if you only fit one new spring then this will stronger than the weaker one still fitted and this will result in the vehicle sitting higher on the side the new spring is fitted too. Also, the new spring will be taking more of the load which will not be spread evenly across the two springs.

Do the rear chassis bushes come with the spring?
No, only rubber bushes to fit either spring eyelet end are supplied. We do sell a Urethane upgrade bush kit by Whiteline if needed.

Is it necessary to replace all the pins / shackles?
No, if you know your originals are in good working order and not corroded on the pins then you can re-use, however, the front pin bolt holding the spring to the chassis has a habit of seizing in the front bush so I would recommend replacing this at the very least. Our rear shackles are now greaseable so many customers are replacing them out of choice.

What about "U" bolts?
Personally, I would always replace these by cutting off the old ones. The time it can take, let alone the effort! to try to remove an old U-bolt can outweigh the price of a pair of new ones.....your mechanic will certainly prefer this option!!
"U" bolt Torque - 90 ft/lb or 123 nm, always torque evenly and of equal length.
It's widely known in the trade that cracked springs in the 'U' bolt area is down to insufficient torque so always ensure this is done correctly and re-checked after some usage.
Cracking of a spring in the 'U' bolt area is not covered by warranty, it's widely publicised throughout spring manufacturers that this is proven to be incorrect 'U' bolts torque.

Does the spring material really make a difference?
Without question, yes as a cheap spring steel manufacturer will more than likely have increased the thickness of the individual leaves to compensate for poor materials, the idea being to try to stop it either cracking or fading early when continually in use, this in turn results in a hard riding spring and indeed one that does end up cracking after prolonged use as they not so supple in the ride leaves.
